  3. Ionic naming system • Combination of cation (+) name and anion (-) name • The cation is always written first • Anion suffixes -ide, -ate, or -ite

  5. Writing ionic formulas • No + and – signs in the final formula • The superscript charge numbers become the opposite element’s subscript amount (reduced, common multiples) 3) use parenthesis on polyatomic ions if you need more than one of them

  9. If H+ and a polyatomic anion (oxyacid) Naming uses just the polyatomic anion name changing the suffix -ate to –ic -ite to –ous
