The Seven DEADLY Sins. Pride. Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity. 1. Explain a time when you were full of pride.

  2. Pride • Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity 1. Explain a time when you were full of pride. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for a prideful person? Pride is linked with the horse and the color violet.

  3. Envy • Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. 1. Explain a time when you were envious of someone. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for an envious person? Envy is linked with the dog and the color green.

  4. Gluttony • Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires. 1. Explain a time when you were gluttonous. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for a gluttonous person? Gluttony is linked with the pig and the color orange.

  5. Dante’s The Divine Comedy In ancient Italy: Comedy = a work that begins in the midst of difficulties but has a favorable outcome (ending). Cantos = chapters / how an epic is divided into sections

  6. Lust • Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. 1. Explain a PG rated time when you witnessed or experienced lust. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for a lustful person? Lust is linked with the cow and the color blue.

  7. Wrath/Anger • Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath. 1. Explain a time when you were angry. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for an angry person? Anger is linked with the bear and the color red

  8. Greed • Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice. 1. Explain a time when you were greedy. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for a greedy person? Greed is linked with the frog and the color yellow.

  9. Sloth • Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. 1. Explain a time when you were full of sloth. 2. What would be a fitting punishment for a slothful person? Sloth is linked with the goat and the color light blue.

  10. In the following episodes of Sponge Bob, the characters are allegories of the 7 Deadly Sins. • Create a chart to track which character represents which sin.

  11. The Inferno = the recognition and rejection of sin. Through this, it’s revealed to Dante how the different sins are punished. The Inferno has 9 circles = The Nine Circles of Hell (see handout) Within these circles are included the 7 Deadly Sins.
