Metadata sub-group Terms of Reference: Scope • The NERC Metadata Content Sub-group (MCS) is a sub-group of the NERC Data Management Advisory Group (DMAG).It is responsible for : • a) ensuring that the metadata records published on the NERC Data Discovery Service are managed according to best practices and are: accurate, consistent, standards compliant, up to date and timely. • b) addressing requirements for creation and management of technical/usage metadata, and ensuring accuracy and consistency across NERC DDCs where appropriate

  5. Metadata sub-group meets every 3 months the same as DMAG and ISG. Membership The Membership will comprise the metadata manager of each of the NERC Designated Data Centres • Sam Pepler - BADC & NEODC (Chair, DMAG) • Jo Bowie - NGDC (Secretary) • Helen Campbell - AEDC (DMAG) • Kay Thorne - BODC • Nick Bertand - EIC    • Steve Donegan - NEODC    • Linda Ault - NGDC

  6. Work plan • Define minimum NERC primary Discovery Metadata Standard. • Identify the existing responsibilities that the data centres have to supply metadata to third parties. • Data centre visits. Can we identify and promulgate best practice in metadata creation?

  7. What else should we do working on together? Identifying and prioritising key issues in the following areas over next 3-5 years • Ontologies and vocabularies • Data publishing and citation • Visualisation and integration • Data standards • Data conditioning
