LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MISSION STATEMENT • The National Federation of Republican Women is America’s foremost political organization, bringing together women to positively impact the direction of our nation. • We come together as a collective force advancing the power of women through political access and participation, fostered by our commitment to achieving a well trained and knowledgeable membership.

  4. GUIDELINES FOR NFRW LEADERS RESPONSIBILITIES OF FEDERATION LEADERS: A. Read and understand the National, State and Club Bylaws. B. Know federal and state Campaign and Election Law. C. Communicate effectively with your Board, your membership and the community.

INTRODUCTION ORGANIZATION PARTICIPATION: In all organizations, no matter how large or small, the breakdown on participation is as follows: 5% Leadership - Elected Officers. 15% Leadership With Direction - Committee or Project Chairmen. 30% Workers - Will volunteer for committees and projects. 50% Members - Will pay dues, but seldom participates.

  9. LISTENING FOUR MAJOR STEPS: . . . HEARING . . . UNDERSTANDING . . . EVALUATING . . . REACTING REMEMBER: Only 11% of what comes into the brain is through the ears !

  10. LISTENING FIVE COMPONENTS OF GOOD LISTENING: 1. ACCEPTANCE - acknowledge that you are listening. 2. REFLECTION - repeat the speaker's words. 3. CLARIFICATION - ask for explanation. 4. INTERPRETATION - absorb what is being said. 5. SUMMARY - conclude what has been said.

BENEFITS OF EFFECTIVE LISTENING • You get more from a conversation than the indifferent listener. • It helps you refrain from snap responses. • You increase your chances of making more realistic decisions. • You show respect to the speaker, and in return receive respect. • You learn to speak more effectively by observing how people convey, or fail to convey, their messages. • You discover the level of language that others will understand best. • You become better prepared to make your own message fit with the knowledge, views, and the feelings of those with whom you are communicating.

  13. TEAM BUILDING An effective Leader will recognize the value of team building, and will administer her duties with the loyalty and support of a dedicated and effective team.

  14. Definition of Team • People working together to achieve a common goal or objective • Individuals contributing their best for the organization, not personal gain

  15. Collaborative Atmosphere • Getting people to work together • Appreciating each effort and contribution • Respecting each other’s opinions, skills and personalities • Addressing rather than ignoring problems • Using good communication skills

  16. TEAM BUILDING BENEFITS OF A TEAM: A. COLLABORATION - People want to work well together and to support one another because they identify with the team. Individual competitiveness is reduced. B. COMMUNICATION – People who have learned to support and trust one another share what they know. Information flows freely up, down and sideways. C. EFFICIENT USE OF RESOURCES – People are willing to apply and share resources, talents, and strengths.

  17. TEAM BUILDING BENEFITS OF A TEAM: C. EFFICIENT USE OF RESOURCES – People are willing to apply and share resources, talents, and strengths. D. SIMULTANEOUS DECISIONS AND SOLUTIONS – Everyone generates and evaluates more options than one person alone could develop. Lead time for implementation is reduced because all concepts are explored together, not sequentially.

  18. TEAM BUILDING BENEFITS OF A TEAM: E. COMMITMENT – People who feel responsibility for and ownership of decisions feel more committed to carry them out. People do not want to let the team down. OUTSTANDING LEADERS ARE NOT ALL ALIKE . . . EACH LEADS FROM THEIR INDIVIDUAL TALENTS AND STRENGTHS . . . AND . . . THEY BUILD THE TEAM !

TEAM BUILDING CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE TEAMS: • Information flows freely and is shared openly and honestly. • Relationships are trusting, respectful, collaborative and supportive. • Conflict is regarded as natural and is focused on issues, not persons. • Atmosphere is open, participative, non-threatening and noncompetitive.

TEAM BUILDING CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE TEAMS: • Decisions use resources efficiently and are by consensus with full commitment. • Creativity is open with more options and is solution oriented. • Power base is shared with contribution by all. • Motivation is commitment to goals set by the team with achievement by the group, not individuals. • Rewards are peer recognition, based on contribution to the group.

  23. UNDERSTAND OUR FEDERATION VALUES LEADERSHIP: A leader is someone you choose to follow to a place you would not go by yourself.

  24. UNDERSTAND OUR FEDERATION VALUES COMMITMENT: The dedication, passion, devotion, loyalty and perseverance that is pledged and undertaken for the good of the organization

  25. UNDERSTAND OUR FEDERATION VALUES INTEGRITY: Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that no one is looking or will know whether you did it or not.

SUMMARY THE FEDERATION LEADER SHOULD: • Be knowledgeable about the Federation at all levels. • Provide the necessary guidance for the Federation to become and remain successful. • Place the Federation’s interests ahead of personal ambition and self-interest. • Be enthusiastic and energetic. • Be a team and consensus builder.

SUMMARY THE FEDERATION LEADER SHOULD: • Provide clear, consistent direction in keeping with the objectives of the Federation. • Be creative, but remain realistic. • Be open to new ideas and different ways to approach tasks. • Have a written plan, but be willing to take risks. • Be confident, but recognize limitations. • Inspire others to work for shared values and goals.

SUMMARY THE FEDERATION LEADER SHOULD: • Delegate tasks, empower others, and hold them accountable. • Lead with a firm hand, but be fair and open to the feelings and ideas of others. • Communicate effectively, but listen even more effectively. • Grow in both membership and mission. • Be comfortable with inevitable change. • Develop the Federation to meet future challenges.
