  2. MISSION POSSIBLE • Provide a company with a device that precisely and accurately measures the velocity of paper traveling through a printer.

  3. BACKGROUND • A common error is to get the difference between the nominal speed and the actual speed confused. • Through the printing process the actual speed of the paper varies constantly until it reaches it’s final destination. • Many factors can contribute to the varying speed of the paper. • Precise and accurate velocity measurements increase the quality of the print and final product. Actual speed can be determined by measuring the paper velocity here. Paper rollers produces the nominal speed because they are moving at a constant speed.

  4. LIGHT WAVES vs. SOUND WAVES • Light Waves: • V m/s • Doesn’t require a medium to travel through • Light spread is extremely narrow • Sound Waves: • Velocity (air): 345 m/s • Requires a medium to travel through • Light spread is wide

  5. DESIGNA precise and accurate laser and receiver that measures time to calculate the paper velocity. • Small, compact laser • Receiver collects data • Presence of beam = no paper data • Absence of beam = collection of paper data • Stream perpendicular to the paper surface and receiver • Versatility to be installed anywhere and at any distance • Doesn’t effect paper path • Increased sampling rate
