Brief History of APE In the 1800’s – doctors tried to “fix” the handicapped through “remedial exercise.” Perkins School for the Blind – 1st physical education for students with visual impairments. 1952- Begin discussion of APE through the AAPHER 1968- Kennedy Foundation begins Special Olympics. IDEA Passed in 1990

  6. Who Can Teach APE? • Legislation allowed each state to decide which requirements allowed a person to be “qualified.” • Only 17 states have specific requirements • Other 35 states: Special Education Teachers, P.E. Teachers and Classroom Staff = qualified

  7. APENS Developed over five years starting in 1991. Worked to develop standards for APE (15 total) May 1997 the first APENS test was given Requirements: BA in PE, 200 practicum hours, 3 credits in APE Class, & valid teaching license. No requirement to hire CAPE
