OROSHÁZA. Orosháza is a town in County Békés in the south-east part of Hungary. It is situated in the westernmost part of the county. Our town is the second largest settlement of the county with about 30,000 inhabitants.

  1. OROSHÁZA

  2. Orosháza is a town in County Békés in the south-east part of Hungary. It is situated in the westernmost part of the county

  3. Our town is the second largest settlement of the county with about 30,000 inhabitants. In 1744 Hungarian Lutherans arrived here from the Transdanubian village, called Zomba and started new life in this region.

  4. The town’s oldest building is the Lutheran Church, built between 1777 and 1830 in late baroque style. The bell taken by the first settlers from Zomba is kept in front of the altar of the church.

  5. The other two churches are the Calvinist Church and the Catholic Church

  6. Our school can be found in the very centre of the town in the neighbourhood of Árpád Park. This park is the place of several outdoor events, such as the Summer Festival, held every July.

  7. The Petőfi Cultural Centre is a very busy place of the town’s life. It gives home to several clubs and exhibitions. The Theatre Room, the Concert Hall and the Town’s Library can also be found in this building.

  8. The Town Museum awaits visitors with temporary and permanent exhibitions. The Town Gallery displays the paintings of famous Hungarian and local artists. The building of The House of Arts Used to be a Jewish Synagogue. Now concerts and exhibitions are held in this renewed, beautiful place.

  9. József Darvas was born in Orosháza in 1912. He was a writer and Member of Parliament. He served as Minister of Religion and Education and Minister of Culture. His birthplace is a Literary Memorial House now.

  10. The industry of the town is developing. The Guardian Hunguard Float Glass Company is the biggest industrial firm not only in the town, but in the region as well.

  11. Gyopárosfürdő is only 3 kilometres from the town centre. It’s a spa and holiday resort in beautiful surroundings. Tourists are advised to try The Waterpark with its indoor and outdoor pools.

  12. The White Lake is about 10 kilometres from the town. It’s part of a national park and it’s a nature reserve too.

  13. This lake is among Hungary’s most significant bird reserves. It’s a nesting place and a migration stop for numerous bird species. In the Puszta Centre a permanent exhibition presents the history and the values of the area.
