What was it about the presentation and/or presenter that made it memorable for you?
CHOOSING A STRUCTURE Keep it Focused and Relevant - You don’t have to tell them everything about a topic. Meet your ojectives. Keep it Simple. -Tell them what you’re going to tell them. -Tell them. -Tell them what you just told them.
o STAYING WITHIN TIME LIMITS Practice, Practice, Practice Time your speech in segments Watch a clock during your presentation Be prepared to lengthen or shorten your presentation Leave time for questions Do NOT go over your allotted time!
Research Recognize that your audience members are incurring costs Adapt your use of jargon Get to know your audience -Ask questions -Ask for their feedback KNOWING YOUR AUDIENCE
The slides are not the messenger – YOU are Look at the audience, not your slides – the fewer the better (1-2 minutes per slide)
PRESENTING DATA IN GRAPHS, TABLES, & CHARTS Know what you want to communicate Choose the data tool and format that will present the data in the clearest and simplest way Aim to express, not impress Provide handouts Ensure the data tool will be visible to all and easy to understand Remember: DATA TOOLS DO NOT EXPLAIN THEMSLEVES!

BODY LANGUAGE TIPS Gestures Stance Facial Expression -Look at your audience at least 95% of the time -Don’t speak unless you are looking at your audience
Be aware of your volume; your own voice sounds louder to you than it does to the participants
Be cognizant of the rate at which you are speaking – 120 to 150 words per minute is normal; 90 words per minuteis most effective.
Use pauses between thoughts to allow the audience to digest the information and make a point speak pause breathe speak
