  2. 4905 Objectives • Greatly similar to 4903 (or used to be). • Course description: “Continuation of CH EN 4903.” • http://www.che.utah.edu/~ring/ • What’s different? • Greater focus on team working. • Greater focus on experimental design. • Greater focus on independent thinking. • Developing your own projects.

  3. 4905 Assignments *It’s possible to replace formal report with a journal article format, with the okay of the instructor.

Late Assignments Assignments handed in past the due date and time will receive a 10% penalty, and an additional x% penalty for each day late (or fraction thereof), where x equals twice the number of days after the due date. If x > 50% then x = 50%. Translation: Being late at all causes a significant penalty and the penalties escalate as days go by, but late is somewhat better than never. Motivation: Mimic the type of late penalty one might find in the workplace.

Proposal • Proposals should aim to satisfy your client. • The department, an outside company, a research group… • New equipment, physical measurement, control capabilities, novel project, teaching module for freshman lab or outreach… • Each individual must choose a project that is significantly distinct from their peers. • Single page proposal & single summary slide due Jan 17th. • http://www.che.utah.edu/projects_lab/courses/lab_handbook/ • 3 min Pitches: Section 2 – Jan 23nd. • A third of topics chosen and teams build around them.

  7. The Effect on Your Grade • Team assignment scores are affected by peers’ team working scores accordingly*: If then If then where ymax is the highest team working score received in your team, y is your team working score, P0 are your team project points, and P are your final team project points adjusted for team working. Translation: As long as you’re within 20% of the max, your score is unaffected. Below that, up to 25% of team project points could be lost. Motivation: Abnormally poor team working carries consequences, but the noise of an occasional lapse or personality conflict will not cause harm. *The professor reserves the right to swoop in and override, if needs be, to fight injustice

  8. Technical Presentations • Each student will give a presentation on research they have personally conducted. • In Projects Lab or in your workplace. • 9 to 11 min talk with 5 min questions. • All topics must be approved by the instructor. • First choice of presentation time determined by first-email-come-first-served. • Email the TA. • Choice of time and topic due Jan 31th. • Grade: • 50% Instructor, 50% CLEAR. • Peer scores?
