Background…Where We’ve Been • Initiative started 3 years ago • Collaboration grew • From departments in student development (Career Services, Student Health and Counseling, Simon Recreation Center, Undergraduate Initiatives, Student Life, Residence Life) to • Athletics • Public Health • Community and Family Medicine • Employee Health • Human Resources • Dining Services “Chartwells” • Nutrition and Dietetics • Campus Ministry • Student Org’s (SGA, Honor’s Society for health, Smokefree SLU, etc) • And growing • Why? • Repeated Programming, the need for stronger and more evidenced-based programming, strains with time, resources and staffing JASPA 2010 Summer Institute

  3. Six Dimensions Of Wellness The SLU Wellness Initiative utilizes the 6 Dimensions of Wellness model developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute. These dimensions include: • Social • Occupational • Spiritual • Physical • Intellectual • Emotional Commitment to the care and development of these areas allows the individual achieve a higher state of well-being. *Source: National Wellness Institute Website (www.nationalwellness.org) JASPA 2010 Summer Institute

  4. SLU’s Wellness Mission The Division of Student Development supports holistic student wellness (mind, body and spirit) and development as part of overall Mission of Saint Louis University. The mission of the SLU Wellness Initiative: In keeping with the Jesuit ideal of educating the whole person, our mission is to enhance the well-being of the Saint Louis University community. Through University collaboration, we strive to offer programs and services that encompass the Six Dimensions of Wellness. These dimensions include: social, occupational, spiritual, physical, intellectual and emotional wellness. Our goal is to promote a balanced approach to healthy living through education and maintenance of ourselves to help better our lives. JASPA 2010 Summer Institute

Strategic Planning and Goals The Purpose of the SLU Wellness Advisory Committee: With a spirit of collaboration, the advisory committee seeks to guide the development, implementation and evaluation of wellness programs at Saint Louis University in line with the Jesuit mission of Saint Louis University. From Student Development Strategic Direction: Engaging the SLU Community (students, faculty, and staff) in programs that develop them as a whole person. Goals for Fiscal Year 2010: • Offer incentives for participation in mind, body and spirit activities through wellness challenge and fitness rewards programs • Utilize technology to create awareness and provide education on wellness through: Google wellness calendar, wellness website, distribution lists, wellness boards, PSA’s and podcasts • Incorporate wellness concepts in programs and services offered across the co-curriculum such as: awareness weeks, peer education, University 101, wellness lectures, cooking demonstrations, and farmer’s markets JASPA 2010 Summer Institute

Next steps: • Continue to make sure wellness initiative goals are represented in and are in support of Student Development Strategic Direction. • Become more outcomes/assessment oriented with regards to wellness. • Consider the practicality of implementing an undergraduate personal health and wellness course. • Research and utilize more spiritually based data and outcomes for integration into wellness initiative.
