  2. The Great Depression and new forms of entertainment helped close the curtain on the glory of the traveling circus.

  3. After the stock market crashed in 1929 and unemployment exceeded 20 percent, many circus-goers exchanged their entertainment dollars for bread.

  4. The years from 1929 through 1939 comprised the worst decade since the Civil War for the circus.
