  1. Photosystem II Uses light to break up water molecule into energized electrons , H+, and ½ O2 H+ stays inside of the thylakoid membrane Electrons are used in chlorophyll replacing the electrons used in the electron transport chain (ETC) Oxygen is released to the atmosphere

  2. Photosystem II • The thylakoid membrane provides a new electron to the chlorophyll to replace the ones it has lost. • The new electron comes from water when the enzyme breaks down the water molecule.

  3. Photosystem I • The pigments use energy from light to re-energize electrons. • NADP+ picks up the high energy electrons along with H+ becoming NADPH. • Enzymes in the thylakoid membrane use electrons to form the NADPH. • NADPH is used to make sugar in the Calvin cycle.

  4. Hydrogen Ion Movement • As an electron passes from the chlorophyll to NADP+ more hydrogen ions are pumped across the thylakoid membrane. • The inside of the thylakoid becomes + charged and the outside of the membrane becomes – charged. • The difference in charges across the membrane provides energy to make ATP.
