  1. Balancing Everyday Equations 7.3 By: Jaymie Quintana & Khoa N.

Desideratum • The ability to try to create and balance formula equations for common everyday items is needed to understand this section. • Word equations are very similar to chemical equations for a multitude of processes that one does everyday. • For example, imagine a bicycle. Simplify all the things needed for a bicycle to 4 main components.Such as the frame, wheels, handlebars, and pedals. • And yes, we’re going to use big words.

  3. Frame + Wheel + Handlebar + Pedal= Bicycle The frame, wheel, handlebar, and pedal are the reactants or the things that make up the bicycle. The bicycle is the product or end result. However, the bicycle is only qualitatively correct.

  4. The Qualitative Perspective • As said in the last slide, this word equation (F+W+H+P) is only qualitatively correct. It shows the kind of parts you needed to make the product. However, this is not sufficient because it does not illustrate the quantitative. • As any idiot knows, a normal bike has a frame, two wheels, a handlebar, and two pedals. • Therefore, if you don’t want a cheap bike made by children off the coast of Djibouti, as shown by the qualitative product of the bike, you must balance the equation out by indicating the number of parts needed.

  5. The picture below shows a balanced equation. Each part on both sides of the equation are equal. The Quantitative Tableau

  6. Notice how this is different from the qualitative version of the equation. This quantitative version shows the number of parts needed for a complete bicycle, instead of just illustrating single reactants.

  7. You Try It! • Take a basketball team for example. Each team has a point guard, a shooting guard, a power forward, a small forward, and a center. • Every guard will be shown by a G • Every forward will be shown by an F • The center will be shown as a C. • On paper, propose a qualitative equation of a basketball team. • Then, write out the quantitative equation of the team. Answer- Center+Forward+Guard ->CF2G2

  8. Next, take a tricycle. The main components of a tricycle consists of a frame, wheels, a seat, a handle and pedals. • There is one frame, three wheels, one seat, one handle, and two pedals. • Now, write the qualitative equation for the tricycle. • And then the quantitative equation for a tricycle. • Answer- Frame+ Wheels+ Seats+ Handle +Pedals-> FW3SHP2 Try It Again! 

When writing an equation, one should make sure that the number of reactants on the left (of the arrow) is equal to the number on the right on the arrow (product). • Balancing equations are everywhere around you. From when you wake up to when you go to sleep. Take breakfast for example, Cereal + Milk -> ummm complete breakfast cereal.   11. Le Homework • Write an equation for a baseball team with the given parts: catcher (C), pitcher (P), basemen (B), shortstop (S), and outfield (O). • Also, try it with a plane; wings (W), engines (E), wheels (W), and the tails (T).
