Review of Lesson 26: Prefix +Root Word + Suffix

5 th grade review of lessons 26 27 28 29

Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud:

renewable

Turn and tell your partner the prefix, suffix, and root word in this word.

Give a thumbs up if you said that the prefix is re-, the suffix is-able, and the root word is new.

Remember that many longer words are made up of a root or root word plus a prefix and suffix. It is sometimes helpful to break a longer word into smaller parts to determine its pronunciation.

Turn and tell your partner what these two words have in common.

Give a thumbs up if you said that they both share the word part ast. Remember that astrand aster are Greek word parts meaning “star”. When you come to a longer word, looking for familiar Greek word parts can help you determine its meaning.

Look at this word and watch me read it:

camouflage

Remember, borrowed words came into English from other languages and can be tricky to decode because in other languages, letters often stand for different sounds than they do in English. The pronunciation of borrowed words often need to be confirmed in a dictionary.

With your partner look at the list of borrowed words below. Pronounce each word to your partner and underline the part of the word that has a different sound than what you might expect (since it is a borrowed word from another language besides English). Confirm your prediction with the dictionary.
