  1. Digital Media Photographs, Images, and Video

  2. Digital Images and Photographs • There are two terms to keep in mind with digital imagery: • Pixel • Dots per Inch (dpi)

  3. Pixels • Pixel is the smallest element of a computer picture. They fit together to make the complete image, like the tiles of a floor. They are really “blocks of color”. • Pixels are also a way to measure the size of an image. 50 X 50 100 X 100

  4. Dots per Inch (dpi) • dpi expresses the “resolution” or image quality. • 72 dpi is normal for web images while 300 dpi and higher indicates photo quality images. 25 dpi 300 dpi

  5. How do you calculate image quality? • If the image is enlarged, the dpi value decreases; conversely, if the image is reduced in size, the dpi value or resolution increases. In simplified terms, just remember that the lower the resolution, the fuzzier the image quality appears. The higher the resolution, the sharper the image quality appears. •  For example, if an image is 1280 x 960 pixels, and you want to print an image that is 200 dpi, then divide 1280 and 960 each by 200 dpi to get the maximum size that the image can be printed without losing clarity, in this case, 6.4 inches by 4.8 inches.

  7. Photo editing programs let you control both pixels and dpi

  8. Computer Screen and Pixels • The type of monitor you have and the video adapter card installed will determine the range of the resolutions available for you to set. The video adapter card contains VRAM (Video RAM Memory). You will not be able to set a higher resolution than what is supported by your video adapter.

  9. Image Pixels and Monitor Settings 400 pixels image on a monitor set to 800X600 resolution • At higher resolutions you seem to gain more desktop "space" because objects will appear smaller in size and icon labels may be more difficult to read at the smaller icon size. • With higher resolutions the display is "sharper". 400 pixels image on a monitor set to 1280X1042 resolution

  10. The iMovie window is 640X480 pixels

  11. Importing Still Images • Still images that are imported into iMovie must be sized to 640X480 pixels to fill the movie window.

  12. iMovie Export Sizes • When exporting Quicktime movies from iMovie • Email is 160X120 • Web is 320X240 • CD-ROM is 640X480
