  2. Direct observation The most obvious way to determine how many animals there are is to count all of members. • For example: we went to the pet adoption center and we wanted to get a boxer dog and there was a lot of choices so we counted to see how many there were.

  3. Indirect observation • Sometimes it is easier to observe signs of organisms rather then the organisms themselves. • For example: we go to where there are gophers in the dirt holes and we count them and then we estimate to see how many there are.

  4. Sampling • You can count animals in the small place and then you can multiply that with the rest of the space. • For example: we count the number of chihuahuas in a small group and then estimate the number to see how much there is

  5. Mark-and- Recapture studies • Another way to measure populations is to capture whatever it is that you were going to and mark it and then recapture it and count the ones that are marked. Then you can estimate and see how many of what you captured. • For example: people capture fish and mark them, then they recapture them and count how many there were marked.
