  3. Long Vowel Rule Copy this into your jotter: A long vowel makes the same sound as when your read the letter (a, e, i, o, u). A long vowel sound can be made by the letter on its own or by putting two or three letters together. E.g. The long vowel sound in the word made can also be spelled using other letters, as in maid or may, or sleigh, or break, or convey.
