  1. Speciation in Darwin’s Finches 1) How genetics is defined in genetic terms 2) What is Speciation?

  2. Genetics and Evolutionary Theory • What is this “gene pool?” • The gene pool for a species consists of all the genes, along with all their different alleles, that are present in a population.

  3. Gene Pool and Evolution • When you talk about evolution in genetic terms, you are talking about “Allele Frequency” or how many times an allele appears in the gene pool.

  4. Allele Frequency

  5. Speciation • A “Species” is a population or group of populations whose members can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. • Speciation: is the formation of a new species.

  6. What causes “Speciation?” • When a population splits into two and those group undergo “Reproductive isolation” they can become two separate species. • Examples include behavioral isolation, geographic isolation, and temporal isolation.

  7. Speciation

  8. The Founder Effect

  9. So What happened to Darwin’s Finches?

  10. The Galapagos Islands
