  7. Lack of communication • Lack of situational awareness • Hazardous attitudes

  8. Communication • The ”CRM Loop” • Five steps:

  9. Inquiry • Assertive Advocacy • Conflict resolution • Decision making • Critique/Feedback

  10. 1. Inquiry • The right and obligation to question • Be specific ”Captain, are you sure that the runway is clear?”

  11. 2. Assertive advocacy • State the name: ”Captain…” • State your discomfort: ”..I’m unconfortable with...” • State your concern: ”..that the Pan am aircraft hasn’t reported clear…” • Offer alternative: ”..can’t we ask traffic control if they are clear..” • Get consent: ” What do you think?”

  12. 3. Conflict resolution • Identify all components of the decision • WHAT is right, not WHO is right • Be tolerant to differences

  13. 4. Decision making • Be flexible and willing to change your mind • Ask for everybodys opinion

  14. 5. Critique / Feedback • Talk about it afterwards, what could have been done better?

  15. Situational awareness • ”What you need to know not to be suprised” • "the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future"

  16. From Endsley 1995

  17. Hazardous attitudes • Pressing • Impulsiveness • Complacency • Excessive deference

  18. 1. Pressing • Bending or breaking rules to achieve a goal

  19. 2. Impulsiveness • To act forcefully and quick, without proper analysis.

  20. 3. Complacency • Lack of attention due to experience

  21. 4. Excessive deference • To be afraid of senior colleagues
