  1. Welcome to Unit 2 Seminar! Please feel free to chat until class begins – I’ll return shortly before class starts! Ream CM103Unit 2

  2. U.2 SEMINAR AGENDA: “Defining the Problem” • In this session, we will address the following: • How Unit 9 project begins now • Choosing a topic that translates into an effective Thesis Statement • What makes a good topic, thesis

  3. Unit 9 Project Overview Topic areas: Gangs * Drugs * Sexual Crimes 1. Choose a general topic 2. Do some research in library – to narrow focus/get ideas 3. Unit 3 project: giving narrow subject area (thesis) for general topic area 4. Paper is NOT a “tell all” (informative); 5. Create a perspective for the paper and prove that idea in your paper (a persuasive or “argument” paper)

  4. TOPIC CHOICE • Choosing your topic • What are some good topics? (sharing ideas!) • Why some topics don’t work • The difference between opinion and fact • Why research helps NOW!

  5. Good topic. . . .not so good topic Your topic needs to have somewhere to “go”. . . (GOOD): “After school programs are not working for teens who are involved with gangs. A new program should be set up that specifically targets these teens.” (Not so good topic): “There are no good after school programs for teen gang members.” **The difference: a “solution” is mentioned – something that SHOULD be done/changed

  6. Good topic. . . Not so good topic Topic needs to be specific! (Not so good): “Sexual crimes are bad and should not happen. Something needs to change.” (Improved!): “Sexual crimes, like rape, are underreported in low income areas. Youths are at risk if they live there.”(BEST): “New policies need to be implemented to help low income teens feel comfortable in reporting sexual crimes, like rape. Since this crime is so underreported, many teen victims don’t get the help and justice they deserve.” **Why is this better? Key words: need, should, deserve

  7. READING FROM RULES FOR WRITERS: how reading applies to your project/paper • Choosing your topic – narrowing down • What is a “hook?” (and why does it matter NOW, before I write my thesis??) • What is my Thesis? How do I get one?? • What should my thesis DO? • Questions?

  8. MICROSOFT WORD 07: The Bare Bones(Word 07 is not required –but if you DO have it, it can help your writing process in many ways!) • A quick tour of the main features of Word 07 • The tabs • Shortcuts • Other features and tools • NOTE: If you are using an earlier version of Word, please visit How to at www.microsoft.com for additional information

  9. MICROSOFT WORD 07: Home Tab Formatting – font/style

  10. MICROSOFT WORD 07: Insert Tab

  11. MICROSOFT WORD 07: References Tab(APA only uses CITATIONS/no foot-endnotes!!)

  12. MICROSOFT WORD 07: Review Tab

  13. Unit 2: what you must do. . . (this week) Discussion Board: (Initial post, 2 peer responses) Reading: (Rules for Writers website) Topic: (Choose general topic, research, and narrow focus) Project: Personal Narrative

  14. Unit 2 project: Narrative Essay *Topic: YOU! *Length: 1-1.5 pages *Finding a central theme: make sure your paper has a cohesive feel (is there a quality, activity, or interests that “defines” why you are in Criminal Justice?) *Purpose: to show WHY/HOW you became interested in the field of CJ *Be sure to: double space; use your SPELL CHECK; read over your draft before submitted (aloud works well!); check for organization of your paper (use separate paragraphs for new ideas)
