  4. Constellations • Constellations are sections of the sky with recognizable star patterns. • Helped people long ago keep track of time and used to navigate. • Location in the sky changes season to season. • Different constellations visible in each Hemisphere.

  7. Zenith • The point in the sky directly above an observer on Earth.

  8. Altitude • An object’s altitude is the angle between the object and the horizon.

  9. The Path of the Stars Across the Sky • As the Earth spins on its axis, stars and planets appear to move. • Circumpolar stars are stars that can be seen at all times of the night.

  10. Light Year • The distance light travels in one year. • A beam of light can travel 300,000 km/sec • 1 light year= 9.47 x 10∧12km • Farthest object we can observe is 10 billion light years away. • *Refer to figure 7---page 19 (Scale in the Universe)

Light • As an object moves away from an observer at a high speed, the light from the object appears redder. ---redshift • As the object moves toward the observer, the light from the object appears blue.---blueshift • Evidence of redshift and blueshift indicate that the universe is expanding. • Evidence of redshift indicates that the universe is expanding.
