  3. What will my child do in English? • The complete curriculum is posted on the FQMS website under Teacher Resources • Grammar (parts of speech) • Figurative Language (simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration) • Writing (6+1 traits) • Comprehension

  4. Units • Literary Forms: Biography, Autobiography, Narrative • Students will demonstrate the ability to read critically and analyze texts to facilitate understanding and interpretation about a person’s life.

  5. Units Continued • Literary Archetypes: Recurring Patterns in Literature • Students will demonstrate the ability to determine important messages and meaning from literary themes in various genres.

  6. Unites Continued • Literary Origins: Folklore and Legends • Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize that folklore preserves a community’s cultural beliefs, customs, and history, through the oral tradition.

  7. Writing Portfolios • Students will be given a writing to store major writing assignments- this stays at school • Students will reflect on their writing and growth throughout the year • Students will complete about 4-6 essays this year in order to persuade/argue, inform, and express ideas • Rough drafts and final drafts should be typed, double spaced in 12 point Times New Roman/Ariel font • Writing is graded on the 6+1 traits

  8. How can I support my child with his/her writing assignments? • Parents should be aware of essay topics and due dates • Parents should read over drafts with students to improve ideas and conventions • Students need to be able to type and print essays

  9. Grades • Please check your child’s grades on Aspen weekly • If you have a question about a specific assignment, please email me • Students with missing assignments can be signed up for lunch support on A days by teachers

  10. Assessments • Students take assessments at the end of each quarter • Students will receive a study guide • Students will complete an assessment reflection that gets signed • The assessment will be worth 10% of the overall quarterly grade • Assessments stay in a secure place in the classroom

Tips to help your child succeed… • Check agenda book and Aspen • Help your child stay organized • Make sure your child knows the schedule for the day • Make sure your child is prepared with the correct materials • Read over essay drafts with your child • If your child is absent, remind him/her to visit teachers to get make- up work
