    4. What to have on the Science Fair Board... Abstract Safety Sheet Purpose and Hypothesis Materials and Procedure Results Conclusions

    5. Abstract… 3 paragraphs (200 words or less) Go to www.chicagostudentsciencefair.org for the form. (Students can actually type right into the form and save it in their folders) Must include… Purpose Procedure Conclusion

    6. Safety Sheet Everything has a safety issue!!!! If you cannot find anything to write, please have students add… I took precaution to ensure safety. The precautions were…

    7. Endorsements… Some projects need permission to be done. ANY project involving any type of living thing (including bacteria and mold), please see me. If your students do a survey, please see me-there is a special consent form that needs to be signed by each person surveyed. If you need and get an endorsement, it needs to be displayed on the front of the science fair board.

    8. Title Page Check the website for the format

    9. Table of Contents You only have to include the items that are after the title page. You do not have to include the items in front of the title page (safety sheet, abstract, etc.)

    10. Acknowledgements Should include people who helped AND ALSO WHAT THEY DID TO HELP

    11. Purpose & Hypothesis Purpose… Why????????????? What do you want to learn by doing this research???????? Hypothesis… IF….THEN…. Statement Must be graphable Must be testable Must test only 1 variable…everything else is controlled.

    12. Review of Literature Amount of sources… (within last 10 years) K-3; 2 sources 4-5; 3-4 sources 6-8; 5-10 sources This document is a summary of what experts say and quotes should be cited and used VERY frequently! (estimate 2 quotes for every page) This document needs to be typed in 14 font, Times New Roman, or Arial. Page length… K-3; 2 pages 4-5; 3-4 pages 6-7; 5-10 pages

    13. Materials and Procedures Procedure should test hypothesis Materials should be listed precisely Procedures should be numbered accurately and be very concise. With your materials list and procedures, another student should be able to do your SAME experiment without question.

    14. Results A presentation of the data collected Pictures, charts, graphs, and other items pertinent to the experiment BUT NOT THE EXPERIMENT ITSELF Label EVERYTHING…caption all pictures, label all axis on graphs, put headings on all charts etc.

    15. Conclusions Restate hypothesis and claim if you proved or disproved your hypothesis. Opinions can only be made if substantiated by collected data. Evaluate and write about the results of the experiment…you do not have to restate exactly what you did.

    16. Reference List Follow APA format The websites have helpful information on how to cite and reference. See handouts

    17. Some helpful hints… The Scientific Paper is the hardest part…focus on that first. Have students create the pieces of the paper that need to be on the board one time and save it. When they do their board, all the information is done and just has to be posted. Pretty boards with poor information and or no paper will not be accepted at the Science Fair!
