  2. Shaping up the New Year • What’s ahead? • If we keep doing things the way we’ve always done them, we’ll keep getting the results we’ve always gotten • So, let’s look at what we’ve always done

  3. Cadet Activities • Encampment Safety • Two physiological incidents • One officially reported • One via the wife network • At risk behaviors • Cadets in the summer • Cadets in the winter • Potential dehydration • Other human factor

  4. Aircraft Operations • NM Wing • No accidents reported • One hangar incident • Human Factors hangar rash • Depth perception failed • Parking plan faulted

Aircraft Operations • National • Tragic year with many fatalities • Highly experienced aviators • Failure to plan • Complacent behavior • “Can’t happen to me!” • Lack of understanding • Aircraft performance • Importance of Mission planning • Briefing and proactive crew participation Cols Ed Lewis and Dion deCamp

  6. If We Keep On Doing Things………. • Let’s change the way we’re doing things. Here is a shopping list: • Brief each and every mission to include: • Crew responsibilities • Each person in the aircraft has a responsibility. Talk about them during the briefing • Terrain avoidance, i.e., how high it is, how fast it is building, what’s our altitude, what’s the MEA and why?, • Speaking up during flight about: • We didn’t plan this! Why are we doing this? This doesn’t look right! Let’s climb and talk about it.

Let’s not Keep On Keepin’ On • Develop high expectations within your squadrons and operations • Don’t accept substandard performance at any level • Develop a peer environment in which squadron members are expected to ask questions, critique, and be members of the team • Any deviations from “standards” cannot be tolerated by anyone

Bluntly Stated: No One is Exempt • Rank does not have its privileges • Dead Lt’s are just as dead as dead Col’s after an accident • Dead co-pilots are just as dead as dead PIC’s if they fail to speak up • Accidents aren’t caused by attitudes, but rather are caused by at-risk behaviors caused by bad habits, poor knowledge, lousy skills, and weak peer environment or unit culture

  9. In New Mexico • For 2008: • Let’s build a culture of compliance with • Regulations • Standards • Procedures • Let’s not accept “business as usual” We build safety through smart dedicated people doing things right, one mission at a time
