  1. HAZMAT Protective Systems Technology transfer Proposal for the manufacturing of Canisters, Impregnation of Carbon and Quality test laboratory

  2. HAZMAT Protective Systems BRIEF CONTENTS • Introduction • Contents of offer • Description of plant and laboratory • Formulation of requirement • Possible future plan of action • Conclusion • Open discussion

  3. INTRODUCTION Hazmat Protective Systems has established itself in the market of air filtration since 1991 and specializes in the manufacturing of filters for personal respiratory protection as well as the impregnation of activated carbons. Manufacturing complies to ISO 9002 since 1994 as audited annually by TUV Rheinland - Germany. All filters comply to EN 141 and 143, which is the International standard for respiratory protection filters. Hazmat has exported a carbon impregnation plant to Taiwan as well as a quality control laboratory, which is used to to verify the quality of the impregnation process. Hazmat has the expertise and know-how to export similar projects with regards to the current plant on a turnkey basis and according to the customers specific requirements.

  4. INTRODUCTION CONTINUED….. The NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical ) filter, designed for use in conjunction with a full face gas mask, has a international standard screw-thread attachment which fits all types of full face masks. The filter canister consists of a double filtration mechanism, which consist of a primary and secondary filter system. The primary filter is on the inlet side and its main function is to contain particles. The media used for this primary stage is HEPA. This is the abbreviation used for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. It contains particles from 0.3 micron and bigger. This is anything from bacteria and bigger. The secondary filter is impregnated activated carbon. The main function of the carbon is to adsorb chemicals from the air passing through. Adsorption is achieved through physical and chemical adsorption. Physical adsorption involves weak Van der Waal’s forces. Chemical adsorption is achieved through impregnation of the carbon with copper, chromium and silver.

  5. CONTENTS OF OFFER • The offer comprise of the transfer of technology for the manufacturing and testing of ASC impregnated carbon as well as canisters for use with a full face mask in a NBC environment which includes: • ASC carbon impregnation plant and related technical documentation. • NBC filter canister manufacturing equipment, assembly line and related technical documentation. • Quality assurance laboratory and related technical documentation.

  6. CONTENTS CONTINUED…... • Updated equipment to the latest technology • Set-up and commissioning in R.S.A • Set-up and commissioning in client country • Training in client country • Technical documentation which includes: • Operators and maintenance manuals • Electrical and pneumatically diagrams • Raw material procurement specifications • Finished product specifications • Test specifications and procedures • Drawings • Commissioning to be completed upon successful manufacture and testing of a specified quantity of carbon and filters • Advise and recommendations on building and service requirements of client

  7. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT AND EQUIPMENT 1. CANISTER MANUFACTURING AND ASSEMBLY

  8. MANUFACTURING AND ASSEMBLY EQUIPMENT

  9. CANISTER EQUIPMENT CONTINUED….. The canister manufacturing equipment includes the moulds for the injection moulding of the components as well as all the equipment required to do the assembly as indicated in the flowcharts. This proposal includes the supply of the process and equipment to manufacture canisters for a production capacity of 15000 canisters per month (8 hour shift / day and 24 days per month). The process includes all the stages from components to the final packed product as described in the flow diagrams. The personnel requirements will be 8 assemblers, a supervisor and a storeman. The capacity can be altered by changing equipment, processes or automation.

  10. 2. CARBON IMPREGNATION PROCESS

  11. CARBON IMPREGNATION EQUIPMENT

  12. CARBON EQUIPMENT CONTINUED….. The carbon impregnation equipment includes all equipment required for handling of chemicals, impregnation, drying, packaging and packing as currently being employed at Hazmat with improvements which will be included. The processes and equipment to manufacture 100kg of carbon per day is included per 8 hour shift for 24 days per month. The carbon will be of the ASC type impregnation as according to the relevant specifications. The personnel requirements will be two process operators and the production capacity can be altered according to the requirements of the client.

  13. 3. QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY • The main purpose of the quality control laboratory will be to verify and test by means of international accepted test methods that the performance and quality of the impregnation process and the filters are according to the relevant specifications. • The tests performed are the following: • Filter canister: • Breathing resistance • Chemical protection - Hydrogen cyanide, Chloropicrin, Cyanogen chloride* • Sodium chloride protection • Filter leakage • Mechanical resistance • Chemical resistance filter body* • Aging test* • Ammonia liberation* • Environmental conditions* * = Optional

  14. QUALITY TESTS CONTINUED…. • Impregnated carbon: • Hardness • Particle size • Active surface area • Pore volume distribution • Macro pore volume* • Moisture content • Ash content • Bulk density • Skeletal density* • Chemical protection - Hydrogen cyanide, Chloropicrin, Cyanogen chloride* • Metal content • Ammonia content* • Dust content* • Ignition temperature* * = Optional

  15. QUALITY EQUIPMENT CONTINUED….. • The established laboratory will be capable to test the impregnated carbon produced every day in batches of 100kg as well as canisters produced in batches of 3000. • Typical instruments will be the surface area and pore size distribution analyzer, service life test bench, atomic absorption spectrometer and general laboratory equipment such as balances, glassware, a furnace, fume cupboard, etc. • The following tests can be performed in the laboratory on the uninpregnated carbon: • Hardness • Particle size distribution • Active surface area • Moisture content • Ash content • Bulk density • Pore volume distribution

  16. LABORATORY BACKGROUND The laboratory responsible for the quality tests is a sister company of Hazmat, which is called Protechnik Laboratories. The quality system of Protechnik was accredited by the South African Accreditation System (SANAS) according to the ISO/IEC Guide 25 which is equivalent to the EN45001. The accreditation implies that the laboratory system is functioning from standard procedures, that the accredited methods were validated and the calibrations are traceable to international standards. To ensure the proper functioning of this system, SANAS performs an annual assessment on the test laboratories of Protechnik. SANAS is a member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation (ILAC) where mutual recognition agreements are promoted. SANAS has now MRA’s ( Mutual Recognition Agreements) with the following countries: Switzerland, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, UK, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan

  17. FORMULATION OF REQUIREMENT In order to establish the exact requirement of the client, the following points are to be discussed and decided upon:

  18. POSSIBLE FUTURE PLAN OF ACTION

  19. CONCLUSION A given respiratory protective device can only be approved when the individual components satisfy the requirements of the test specification and practical performance tests have been carried out on the product. This proposal gives the buyer the opportunity to acquire the technology and know-how to manufacture and test filter canisters for use in a chemical warfare environment. The technology includes equipment, all related technical documentation (such as raw material specifications, operating manuals, test procedures, drawings, etc.), training and all information required to manufacture and test the filters according to international accepted standards. The purpose of the above discussion is to determine the exact requirement of the client. Should the client be interested, a detail quotation and proposal will follow set out with great detail and elaboration on all aspects of the offer.
