  2. Irreparable • Adjective • Impossible to repair • Synonym: broken; ruined • Teacher’s Sentence: Tripping and falling in front of a group of seniors caused irreparable damage to the freshman’s self-esteem.

  3. Inscrutable • Adjective • Hard to understand or interpret • Synonym: incomprehensible • Teacher’s Sentence: Judging from my teacher’s inscrutable expression, I couldn’t tell if she thought my joke was funny or not.

  4. Indulge • Verb • To treat with excessive tolerance; to spoil • Synonym: gratify • Teacher’s Sentence: The harried mother did not want to indulge her child’s demands, but he was beginning to throw a tantrum.

  11. Hedge • Verb • To avoid giving a direct answer • Synonym: to stall, to evade • Teacher’s Sentence: Because I didn’t want to tell my five-year-old that Santa was fictional, I had to hedge my response by turning around and asking him what he thought about it.
