  3. Warm Up 1. What is the bony structure that forms the roof of the mouth? Hard plate 2. The first section of the large intestine is the________? Cecum 3.   4. What you need to feed patient: • Food tray • Towels or paper towels • Pen or pencil • Bed table • Food and liquids

  5. Procedures before feeding: • Obtain authorization to enter room • Introduce yourself • Wash yours and patients hands • Prepare patient for mealtime • Check tray and make sure everything is correct • Place tray over bed table • If patient can feed him- or herself arrange everything on the tray conveniently

  6. Procedures to feed patient: • Test hot liquids • Use separate straw for each liquid offered • Hold utensils at a right angle • Feed the patient from the tip of utensil • Tell the patient what he/she is eating • Allow time for patient to chew • Use a towel or napkin to wipe the patients mouth

  7. Procedures after feeding patient: • Encourage patient to eat as much as possible • Allow patient to wash hands • Make sure everything is secure and lower the bed • Place supplies near the patient for easy access • Note how much food was eaten • Clean and replace all equipment • Wash your hands • Report that the patient has been fed and or record all required information

  8. Closing Activity: • Write down one thing you understand and one thing that is unclear to you
