  2. What is the problem?

  3. Introduction • Current curriculum is outdated • Reform curriculum to be synchronous with goals of the future anatomists and with the developments of technology • The new curriculum is designed to : • Provide students with the coursework and techniques needed to perform well in clinical labs • Provide students with teaching (lab and lecture) experience to pursue a career in academia.

  4. Rationale • Howard University is one of few Universities in the United States to offer a PhD strictly in anatomy. • Steady decline in the number of trained gross anatomists • 100% of graduate students in the anatomy department are in clinical labs • The scope of coursework currently offered is narrow

  5. History • Mount Sinai School of Medicine • Challenges students of the “interactive generation’ • Comprehensive program • College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University • Modular resource center • Wright State University • Team based learning

  6. Questions • Will the development of a new curriculum: • increase student learning and preparation for clinical labs? • increase student preparation for the professoriate? • increase student overall satisfaction?

  7. Methods • Conduct a student survey • Introduce a new program of study

  8. Methods

  9. Expected Outcomes

  10. Conclusions

  11. Future Applications

  12. Comments • Suggestions on generating quantitative vs. qualitative data? • No comprehensive exams • No certification exams to take upon completion of program
