  2. I. British Art • An Over-view of British Art A. Before 18th century a. Most artists with continental characteristics. b. The first important English painter, Nicholas Hilliard was a prolific painter of the queen. B. In the 18th century a. William Hogarth: quirky and untypical, standing outside any school b.   8. 3. Some Well-known Artists A. Christopher Wren a. Famous architect of 17th century b. A scientist as well as architect c. He built over 50 new churches in London including St. Paul’s Cathedral. d. He died in 1723 and became the first to be buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral. B. William Turner a. One of the finest landscape artist b. His work was exhibited when he was a teenager. c. He was born in London, on April 23, 1775.

  10. C. Lucian Freud a. born in Berlin in 1922 b. “the greatest living realist painter” and “the greatest painter of our time” c. He produced an impressive body of highly contemporary and powerful classical etchings.

  11. D. Sarah Lucas a. Position: one of the leading figures in an outstanding generation of young British artists who emerged during the 1990s; international reputation for provocative works b. Features: sculptures from a heterogeneous and unexpected range of everyday material; making constant reference to the human body; questioning gender definitions and challenging macho culture; making provocative self-portraits that question traditional depictions of women and challenging the cliched image of the modern artist in work. c. There are important music festivals and music halls. D. The Royal Albert Hall in London hosts the biggest annual classical music festival, known as the Proms. E. Britain has produced many composers and conductors. F. The British jazz scene holds an important place in the world. G. Pop and rock music is an essential part of British culture.

  14. 2. Some Pop Stars A. Bonnie Tyler---a rock star a. Tyler scored a number three hit with their It’s a Heartache in 1978. b.Total Eclipse of the Heart spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and helped Faster Than the Speed of Night sell over a million copies and debut at No. 1 in the UK. c. Tyler recorded Holding Out For a Hero which proves her last major success.

  15. B. Dido---an electronic pop chanteuse a. born in 1971, London b. At the age of 6, she entered London’s Guildhall School of Music and mastered piano, violin and recorder. c. She joined the trip-hop outfit Faithless in 1995 and their Reverence sold 5 million copies worldwide in 1996. d. She worked on solo material, developing a ethereal sound combining acoustic pop and electronic. e. She released her debut LP, No Angel in mid-1999. f. Her biggest break, Thank You, became Top Five smash in early 2001. g. In Sep. 2003, she released Life for Rent.

Life • born in Georgia (former USSR) in 1984. • She won the TV competition called “Stars Up Their Nose” and gained valuable experience. • She started writing songs in 2001. b. Achievements in Music • In 2003 she was invited to perform at the Royal Variety. • In Nov. 2003 she headlined her gig at the Shepherds Bush Empire, showing her talent for performing. • Her debut album Call Off the Searchwas released in 2003 ,hit No. 1 in 2004 ,hit No. 1 spot in Denmark and became a top five album in Japan.

  17. At the end of Feb. 2004 she embarked on her debut live tour. • “Late Late Show” in America in 2005 c. Charity activities • As the ambassador for “Save The Children”, she joined the recording of Tears In Heaven as a fundraising single. • She joined the line up for the Band Aid 20 single to record a new version of Do They Know It’s Christmas. • In March 2005 she performed in aid of Mandela’s AIDS foundation. d. Awards • British Citizen • Performing at the Royal Wedding of Prince in Holland and at the Norwegian Royal Gala Concert.

  22. C. Ralph Fiennes a. Born in 1962 in England b. He ranked No. 34 in Empire magazine's “The top 100 Movie Stars of All Time” list. c. The first to win a Tony Award for playing Hamlet d. On March 2001, he received the William Shakespeare Award. e. He was chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history. f. He was nominated for 2 Oscars, and he has another 11 wins and 20 nominations.

  23. D. Colin Firth a. Born in 1960, Hampshire, England b. His first professional role was as Bennet in the West End production of another country. c. He played character parts in both film and television. d. He received the Royal Television Society Best Actor award. e. He is best known for his successful role in the 1995 TV version of Pride and Prejudice and he received a BAFTA nomination for his role of Mr. Darcy.

  24. E. Helen Mirren a. Born in 1945, London b. She was nominated for Best Actress, Tony Award for “A Month in the Country”. c. She is very famous for her roles of Queens, and she is the only actress to play both Queen Elizabeth I and II for 6 times. d. She became the third person to win two Golden Globes for acting in the same year. e. She won an Oscar Award for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

  25. F. Kate Winslet a. Born in 1975 in England b. She won an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her subtle performance in Sense and Sensibility in 1995. c. She received the Best Actress for Titanic in 1997. d. She earned an Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actress in Extras and received Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar nomination for Best Actress. e. Other works: Quills(2000),Enigma(2001), Eternal Sunshine(2004), Romance & Cigarettes

  26. G. Keira Knightley a. Born in England in 1985 b. Her first starring role followed in 200 in Princess of Thieves. c. Her breakthrough role was in the English football-themed film, Bend It Like Beckham. d. She was cast in the big budget action film, Pirates of the Caribbean, and she was a leading actress in The Curse of the Black Pearl. e. Pride and Prejudice: Comedy/ Musical Golden Globes nomination and Academy Award for Best Actress nomination.
