  1. Tips for Filling Out a Job Application

  2. Tips for Filling Out the Application . . . 1. Prepare Your Answers 2. Read it Thoroughly 3. Make a Draft - What we are doing today 4. Make it Legible • If writing by hand – use blue or black ink only, and write neatly • No pencil • Use an erasable ink pen or whiteout to correct minor errors. • If you have made a major mistake, then start over on a new form.

  3. . . . More tips . . . 5. Complete the Whole Application • For questions where you do not have an answer, use the phase "not applicable" or its abbreviation "n/a.“ This lets the reader know you did not carelessly skip over the item. • For awkward questions such as expected salary, answer with a word such as "negotiable" or "open.” • You do not want to price yourself out of a job by listing too high a salary requirement, nor do you want to undersell yourself by listing too low a salary. 6. Careful Phrasing • Learn to phrase your answers in a manner that shows you in the best light. • Never lie on an application, but you can present negatives in a positive way or omit details that could be explained better in an interview.

  4. And finally . . . 7. References • Select and provide references carefully. • Be certain to ask in advance if someone will serve as a reference for you. • Teachers, coaches, scout leaders, and religious leaders, along with former employers make the best references.
