  1. Computational Skills Learned in CSE3 By SameraYousuf Image Analysis and Manipulation with Photoshop Computational Thinking Overview CSE3 is an introductory course in computer technology and aims to foster fluency in information technology (IT). The class uses programs such as Scratch, Excel, Word, Notepad++ and PowerPoint to achieve this goal of fluency. With Adobe Photoshop we were able to edit and enhance photos. The program enables actions such as ridding a face of wrinkles, changing the color of one’s hair, making it appear as if a gap in teeth is not present when in actuality it is, etc. All of these actions were done while editing a photo of Madonna. Also, you can make a compilation of images appear to be a video which we did with a before and after picture of a melting glacier and inserted our own image as a transition, this image being a mix between the two true images. Computational thinking is the thinking required when it comes to computer programming. Because computers are not humans, we cannot just put in any instructions and hope that the computer will understand what we mean by them. Rather, we must give very specific, step-by-step instructions. This was imperative to know in order to master Excel. Visual Programming with Scratch Scratch is a program created by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. We used this program in CSE3 in order to better understand computational linguistics and to learn how to develop computer programs. Through Scratch we learned how one has to enter instructions in the computer perfectly. Data Analysis and Visualization with Excel Presentation of Information with Word & PowerPoint Making Information Available to the World with HTML and Web Pages With Excel we were able to enter in mass amounts of data, amounts that previous versions of Excel could not even contain. With this data, we were able to also write equations of certain columns to figure out the maximum, minimum and average values in a column, for instance. Not only did we just have to type in numbers and simply imagine how the data would look like graphically, but we were able to convert the data into a visually appealing graph, whether it be pie, line, bar, scatter, etc. Excel was an extremely helpful tool in regards to better understanding computer technology. With Notepad++, we were able to write in html codes for things such as calendars, so that we could potentially put them online. By creating a table and putting in headings, we were able to make our very own calendar and by using specific html codes that we learned in the course, we also created links to websites about holidays during specific days of the month. We transferred the html codes from Notepad++ through SSH Secure Shell and onto our CSE3 Homepage and by doing this, were able to access all our work through the web, regardless of what computer one accessed it from.
