  1. VRE Fourth Grade Curriculum Night 4A – Mrs. Gulam 4B – Miss Nolan 4C –Mrs. Henderson 4D – Mrs. Greckel

  2. Guiding Purpose As a Project Based Learning (PBL) school, the staff at Valley Ranch believes in engaging students in authentic and relevant learning experiences. This is done by teaching through the lens of PBL. Through this process Valley Ranch students become critical thinkers, consumers of information, informed researchers and effective communicators. Many learning projects are accomplished as a group which fosters collaborators and informed decision makers.

  3. PBL • VRE is a Project-Based Learning (PBL) School. • In PBL, students are guided through the curriculum by a meaningful question to explore, an engaging real-world problem to solve, or a challenge to design or create something. • Students will be involved in PBLs throughout the year.

  5. Pride Folders • Discipline is monitored using the Pride Folder. • As a PBL project, students created a list of rules for all fourth graders to follow. These rules can be found in your packet. • An infraction of the rules will be marked on the calendar inside the folder. • Pride Folders will be sent home on the last day of the week. • Graded papers will also go home in the Pride Folder. • Please sign and return the Pride Folder the following school day.

  7. Planner • It is the student’s responsibility to write down assignments and special dates. • Please discuss a work schedule with your child on the first day of every week so that all assignments are ready to be turned in when they are due. • Parents do not need to sign planners.

  8. Class Work • Only papers with a circled grade are put in the grade book. • Graded papers go home in the Pride Folder each week. • Please sign and return any paper that is circled with a grade below 70. • Signed papers and Pride Folder should be returned the following school day.

  9. Grades • Grades are given on daily work, quizzes, projects, tests, participation in discussions, and other oral material. • Only circled grades are put in the grade book. Non-circled grades help to monitor new concepts and skills.

Corrected Work • If a student earns a grade of 69 or below on an assignment, they have the opportunity to correct the assignment for a maximum final score of 70. • Students cannot correct tests or quizzes to improve their grade. • Students cannot correct assignments if the grade is below 70 due to incorrect heading or incorrect title. • Students have one week from the date returned to make corrections and return to the teacher.

  12. Grading Categories and Weighting • Tests, quizzes, and major projects account for 45% of the student’s average. • Daily work accounts for 55% of the student’s average.

  13. Report Cards • Report Cards will be a dual report card. • Numerical grades - 70 or higher is considered passing. • Report Cards will also have a Standards-Based component. • Progress Reports will go home only to students who have a 74 or below in a subject area. • Portal - Teachers do not update grades daily. • Graded papers will go home on a regular basis.

  15. Student-Led Conferences • Students will participate in fall conferences as part of a student-led conference. • More information will be available soon.

  16. STAAR • STAAR Tests: • Writing: April 1st-2nd • Math: April 22nd • Reading: April 23rd • Please do not take the STAAR Released Tests. They are used for assessments throughout the year.

  17. Homework • Homework prepares the students for upcoming lessons, reinforces what is being learned, teaches responsibility, and helps the students develop positive study habits. • Homework should not take longer than 50 minutes per day to complete, if paced throughout the week. • If your child does not complete an assignment in class, he/she will complete it during recess and/or at home. It should be turned in the following school day or will be considered late.

  19. Weekly Work (continued) • Composition: Students will be given a writing assignment once a month, starting in November. The students will be required to write a composition using the vocabulary words and the idioms they have learned. The prewriting and rough draft will be due on a Friday. The final copy, along with the previous week’s prewriting and rough draft, will be due the following Friday.

  20. Daily Homework • Multiplication facts 0-12 • Division facts 0-12 will start in October • Facts should be checked for accuracy and initialed by a parent each night. • Teachers will check for completion only.

  21. Spelling • District Expectation: Words Their Way • Differentiated Spelling Development • Assessments at Beginning of Year, Middle of Year, and End of Year used to determine student’s spelling stage.

  22. Textbooks • Math and Reading Textbooks • www.pearsonsuccessnet.com • Students are expected to keep their books clean and undamaged. Any damage will result in a fine. • Please cover all textbooks at all times.

  23. VRE Star Savers Bank • Fourth Grade operates the bank. • The bank is open on the first and third Friday of each month. • Bank jobs: Teller, Bookkeeper, Customer Service, Marketing and Advertising, Office Manager, and Security • A bank application came home with your child last Monday. It will be due Friday, September 6th. • We will need several parents to assist with the bank. If you can help one Friday a month from 7:25-8:30 A.M., please let your teacher know.

  26. Austin • Thursday, May 29th • 6 Chaperones needed per class • Tentative Cost: Around $60 per student or chaperone • Cost pays for: • Transportation on a charter bus • Three snacks and waters • Lunch and dinner • Admission and movie at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum • T-Shirt

  27. Schedule • A schedule is included in the packet. We hope this information is helpful to you when planning dental/doctor appointments.

  28. Class List • A class list is also included. • If birthday party invitations are given out at school, please include one for every child in the class, to eliminate hurt feelings.

  29. State Guidelines • Due to state guidelines, food of any kind (including candy) may not be handed out to students during the school day by anyone for any reason. • Birthday treats at lunchtime are the exception to this law. Suggestions for treats include cookies, donuts, brownies, etc. Please limit treats to one item per child.

  30. Attendance Policies • Students must be in the classroom at 7:50 A.M. to be counted present. Any time after 7:50 A.M. will be counted as tardy. • The number of minutes students are tardy is recorded, and when students have been tardy a full day’s worth of time, they will be considered to be absent for one day.

  31. Dismissal Policies • Students will be dismissed at the side entrance by the cafeteria. • Once outside, students with younger siblings will meet them at the front entrance. • Students and adults must use the crosswalk when crossing the parent loops.

  32. Communication Plan • Fourth Grade teachers will e-mail our weekly newsletter at the beginning of each week. • Newsletters are also available on teachers’ webpages. • E-mail or call teachers whenever a question or concern arises.

  33. PTO • PTO Membership Drive ~ $15.00 per family • Please participate in Write-a-Check. Money from that fundraiser will be used to pay for technology needs on our campus. • Parent involvement is greatly needed for PTO programs and classroom activities. Please help our school and our grade level!
