Lesson 17 Review:Infinitives RECAP!4/25/14 Standard 5: Presentational Writing: The student will be able to present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context in the target language. (WL.K12.NM.5) Benchmark: 1. Provide basic information in writing using familiar topics, often using previously learned expressions and phrases. (WL.K12.NM.5.1) Benchmark: 2. Fill out a simple form with basic information. (WL.K12.NM.5.2) Benchmark: 3. Write simple sentences about self and /or others. (WL.K12.NM.5.3)

  2. Infinitivesp. 128 text • An infinitive is a verb with the word “to” in front of it • to carry, to tell, to love, to hurry… • Remember: “TO infinity (-ive)…” 

  3. Using Infinitives • In Latin, infinitives are the 2ndprincipal part of the verb. • Infinitives end in –re. • amo, amare: to love • porto, portare: to carry • doceo, docere: to teach

  4. Things to Take Away With You… • Infinitives are translated “to (verb)” • Infinitives are the 2nd part of a Latin verb. • Latin infinitives are recognized by their –re ending.

  5. Fun With Infinitives! • Today’s activity will help you become familiar with using the –re ending for infinitives. • You will make a mini-poster about yourself using 4 infinitive phrases: • I like to…. • I don’t like to… • I am able to… • Someday I want to…

  6. Words That Use Infinitives • amo: I like… • Cantareamo. I like to sing. • possum: I am able… • Cantarepossum. I am able to sing. • cupio: I want… • Cantarecupio. I want to sing. Possum does not mean

  7. Follow this format. Use the “Infinitive Sheet” for phrases to complete each statement in Latin. Use as many different phrases as possible. (daily grade) Write at least 2 things you like to do. __________________ amo. Example: Cantare et legereamo. I like to sing and to read. 2. Write something you don’t like to do. __________________ non amo. Example: Castratendere non amo. I don’t like to camp. Mrs. Sellers 3. Write something you are able to do. __________________ possum. Example: Fidibuscanere possum. I am able to play an instrument. 4. Write something you want to do someday. Posthac, _____________ cupio. Example: Posthac, iterfacerecupio. Someday, I want to travel.
