SO WHY ARE WE HERE? • Enhanced understanding of emerging renewable heat technologies • Typical applications • Drivers for renewable heat and CHP: • RHI, Green Deal and ECO • CRC • CSR • Above inflation energy costs / business competitiveness • Fuel poverty • Future proofing • Shorter payback renewable technologies • Planning issues

THE RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE (RHI) • £860 million fund! • Non-domestic sector scheme launched Nov. 2011 • Supports: • biomass and municipal waste incineration (including CHP) • ground and water source heat pumps • geothermal (including CHP) • solar thermal less than 200 kWth) • biogas combustion (except from landfill gas but including CHP; at capacities of less than 200 kWth) and biomethaneinjection. NOTE: Fossil fuelled CHP is NOT supported! • Tariffs under review due to low uptake • Improved support for GSHP, solar thermal, large biomass • Scheme for households Spring 2014

AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS • Refrigeration process transfers low grade energy from outside air into high grade energy for heating and HW • Domestic or commercial apps. – inefficient <-5 deg.C • Electricity used < heat produced. • Can be used for air-con. • Domestic cost £6K - £10K (£1.3K RHI grant) – payback for electric heating c.£380pa – no saving for gas.

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS • Harness heat from ground by pumping water through it. • Heat pump increases temperature for heating or HW.  • The electricity used < the heat produced. • Planning permission for a borehole? • Domestic cost £9K - £17K (£1.3K RHI grant) – payback for electric heating c.£480pa • Not suitable to replace gas CH.

CHP • CHP generates electricity whilst capturing generator heat. • A lorry engine with metal tubing wrapped around it! • Efficiency of CHP plants > 80% at the point of use • CHP fuel can be renewable or fossil • Proven and reliable technology • Needs large heat demand for maximum savings • Micro-CHP available for single dwellings • Minimum 10% saving on energy

BIOMASS • Burning logs, wood chips or wood pellets in stove or biomass boiler. • Can be plumbed into existing central heating • Popular replacement for oil-fired boilers • Planning issues: • Large space requirement • Needs chimney to release gases / particulates > 150kW (Clean Air Act 1993) • Fuel deliveries • Mature technology: • very popular in Nordic countries and Germany • up to 97% efficiency • auto-fuel feed • computer controlled • pellets about 1% inert ash residue
