  1. Cloud Computing http://www.exophrine.com/2010/07/what-is-cloud-computing.html Groups 7 and 8

  2. What is Cloud Computing? • Offers the ability to access software or information that can be delivered on-demand, over the internet, without the need to store it locally. • Local computers are attached to the cloud via a network connection in order to run software, operating systems, and store data.

  3. Operating Systems in the Cloud(Thin Clients) • A small, local machine, which has basic hardware and software to log in to a remote desktop • Servers do all the processing in central location

  4.  Lower hardware cost  Lower software cost  Higher user-to-system ratio  Lower IT operations cost Reduce downtime per user by 79%, Gartner research. Energy costs are up to 88% less than a desktop PC All changes made in a central location Thin Clients have a life span of 7-10 years Small footprint

  5. Software in the Cloud • Cloud based software is a way to centralize application updates and distribution.  • It allows technology staff to upgrade an entire business from their office instead of making a local change on every machine Different options:     Local Servers - in the company/school's intranet     Web Based - Managed by another business (Google docs,                                myapps.niu.edu, etc.)

  6. Computers, and other supported devices, store files on a database  Transfer of files and storage can be encrypted RAID systems can create redundant storage Data Storage in the Cloud

  7. Cost advantages • Although switching costs depend on the size of the business there is a lower total cost of ownership. • According to a study by Gartner (TCO Comparison of PCs with Server-Based Computing, June 2006) thin client TCO annual savings have been measured as high as:  • 79% less downtime cost per user  • 16% capital cost savings  • 34% less in maintenance  • 19% less to operate  • 48% overall lower total cost http://www.hp.com/sbso/solutions/pc_expertise/article/thinclients_consider.html

  8. Access applications and data from anywhere at any time Bring hardware costs down (Cheaper to upgrade servers than individual computers) Cloud computing systems give organizations company-wide access to computer applications Allows companies to store data off-site rather than using their own storage space Software upgrade faster and easier http://computer.howstuffworks.com/cloud-computing/cloud-computing2.htm Advantages in the Cloud

  9. Requires a constant Internet connection Web-based applications can run slower depending on network traffic Stored data might not be secure http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1324280&seqNum=2 Doesn't work well with low-speed connections Web-based applications may have limited features Stored data can be lost if there is no local back-up Disadvantages in the Cloud

  10. Possible Security Issues of Cloud Computing It is important to understand exactly WHAT cloud computing is and HOW cloud computing works before implementing it in your business. • Regulatory Compliance - customers are responsible for the security and integrity of their own data • Data Location - When using the cloud, you may not know where exactly your data is hosted (it is encouraged to ask providers whether they will make contractual commitment to respect local privacy requirements for their customers) •  Recovery of Information - A cloud provider is responsible for telling you what will happen to your data/service in a disaster situation http://www.infoworld.com/d/security-central/gartner-seven-cloud-computing-security-risks-853?page=0,1

  11. Cloud Computing in business today • Merrill Lynch estimates that in the next five years, the global market for cloud computing will surge to $95 billion annually. •  IBM just authorized a new $360 million cloud computing data center in North Carolina, bringing their worldwide total to nine. •  Dell supplies some of the largest cloud computing companies, currently including Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon and Yahoo. •  This area of Dell's business is said to be a several-hundred-million-dollar business currently, and is expected to become a billion-dollar business in a couple of years.

  12. Possible uses in the future • A possible  future use for cloud computing will be in having more sophisticated-yet-affordable local networks that allow people to "Have the Cloud" in their homes • Another use will be in the continuous need for people to desire access to numerous devises that provide data and applications, especially to the smart phone market • One real world application is that if you lose your car keys, you will be able to find them because they will be equipped with software that allows the keys to be detected through the internet

  13. Possible uses in the Future (cont.) • More advanced desktop-cloud hybrid technology will heighten and accelerate data usage and sharing between people's primary networks of information with dramatically enhanced efficiency and speed • Cloud computing will provide job opportunities that help keep people's information and their privacy kept private and not in the hands of companies wanting to control the openness of sharing data and information through the internet via "The Cloud"
