  3. Classification of membranes • Epithelial • Mucous • Serous • Cutaneous(covers the body surface) • Synovial membrane • Lines joint cavities (articulation) • Areolar connective tissue

  4. Mucous membranes • Line cavities that communicate with the exterior • Contain lamina propria: loose connective tissue • Epithelial tissue: stratified squamous, simple columnar,etc • Produces mucus • Wet membranes • Mucus x urine

  5. Serous membranes • Line sealed internal cavities • Secretes serous fluid • Simple squamous epithelial • Endothelium • Lines blood vessels • Endocardium • Lines the heart cavity

  6. Serous membranes • Mesothelium • Two layers:Visceral x parietal • Pleura • Peritoneum • Pericardium
