Mr. P’s Readers Notebook • I think that the little boy is devastated because when the other boy and his grandpa walk by he wishes that his grandpa was with him. • I wonder why the dad kept rubbing his name over the names over and over again. I predict he did this because he wanted to remember the way the name felt so that he would always have his dad in his heart.

Mr. P’s Example • I think that the little boy is devastated because when the other boy and his grandpa walk by he wishes that his grandpa was with him. Another example of when the boy feels devastated is when he his dad is rubbing the grandfather’s name over and over with his finger and his voice blurs because it must have been hard for him to see his dad so upset. This connects with the time when ________ passed away in my family and I missed him/her just like the boy must have missed his grandfather. To add on, I think the author’s message was that everyone loses someone, but it is important to remember them. My evidence for my thinking is that the boy lost his grandpa, but he was still remembering him and keeping him in his heart because he was at the wall. I also believe that the author’s message could have been that everyone faces losing someone and it’s ok to be upset about it. I think this because the dad was sad that he lost his father and people who lose someone can feel sad.

Another example of when the boy feels devastated is when his dad is rubbing the grandfather’s name over and over with his finger and his voice blurs because it must have been hard for him to see his dad so upset. This connects with the time when my grandmother passed away in my family and I missed her just like the boy must have missed his grandfather.
