  1. CSI: Comprehensive SelectionInvestigation

  2. CSI Lab Kit • Create a lab kit using suggested tokens as symbols to represent each of the 6 steps in the Reading Process Flow Map. • Tip: A party treat box can be used as the lab kit, and the tokens can be put in ziploc baggies and labeled as “evidence” (Exhibits 1A, 1B, 2, etc.) These items can be found at party/dollar stores or pictures could be substituted instead.

  3. STEP 1 • Cordon off the passage with yellow tape (highlighter), and read it for the 1st time. TIP: The caution tape tells students not to touch any evidence, just look and read—Do NOT tamper with the evidence before taking a mental picture (camera) of it by reading. 1B 1A

  4. STEP 2 • Read and underline important/key words in the question stems. TIP: Using a flower with a wire stem, bend it into a question mark shape to remind students of question stems. Also, a key is an excellent reminder for key words. 2B 2A

  5. STEP 3 • Read the passage a second time, making notes/Thinking Maps in the margin. TIP: A small notepad reminds students to take notes or a map reminds them to use Thinking Maps to find answers. 3B 3A

  6. STEP 4 • Mark the correct answer. Prove why it is correct and other choices are incorrect. Document with text evidence. TIP: A magnifying glass reminds students to look closely for all evidence to prove/disprove answers. 4

  7. STEP 5 • Check, double-check, and triple-check your answer choices. TIP: A checker game piece will remind students to check their work—three checkers for three times. 5

  8. STEP 6 • Bubble answers carefully, and check again! 6B TIP: Bubbles will remind students to save the best for last and bubble in all of the answers. Then add one more checker for checking one more time. 6A
