  1. GIF++ Technical specifications Dorothea Pfeiffer GIF++ Users Meeting 29.06.2012

  2. Technical Specifications Facility • Radiation field • Irradiation source: 137Cs of 7 – 10 TBq, front and rear irradiation field (Talk by R. Fortin) • Particle beam: 100 GeV muons, 104 muons per spill in 10 x 10 cm2 • Area layout • Bunker (enough space for detectors 3 m wide and 4 m high) • Detector preparation area • Short term storage area • Control room/barracks • Control and logging system • Hard-wired common control system (source, beam, gas) • Web based monitoring and logging Source: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1207380/files/SPSC-P-339.pdf Dorothea Pfeiffer

  4. Facility Design Roof protects against radiation, allows ventilation, can be opened “PAD” Downstream Sliding door for detectors Downstream Dump Upstream Courtesy S. Girod Dorothea Pfeiffer Dump

  5. Technical Specifications Infrastructure • Peripheral infrastructure and services • Electricity, Ethernet, compressed air, chilled water • Cable and pipe trays • Crane access • Gas supply, distribution and detection • Safety systems (beam, access, interlocks) • Infrastructure inside radiation area • Scanning system/shuttle (scan equipment across the beam) [to be discussed] • Temperature controlled environment (20° C, 30-50% humidity) • Trigger setup • Dose rate monitoring • Beam instrumentation • Neutral gases: Ar, N2, CO2, He, Xe at > 5 bar • Flammable gases: iC4H10, CH4, Ar/H2 • Special gases: C2H2F4, SF6, CF4 • Mixers, consumption monitors, analysis Source: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1207380/files/SPSC-P-339.pdf Dorothea Pfeiffer

  6. GIF++ UseCase Dorothea Pfeiffer

  7. Infrastructure Issues • Access system: Single Person Access System (SAS) is required due to source activity • Temperature and humidity control of bunker: required values, admissible fluctuations, implementation (tent)? • Space for racks in bunker really needed? • Scanning device needed? How to implement it? • Others will come as we advance with the detailed design of the facility…. Dorothea Pfeiffer

  8. EN-MEF Team for GIF++ • Overall management/physicist in charge: I. Efthymiopoulos • Project Engineer during construction: D. Pfeiffer • Design and integration: S. Girod • Technical support area and infrastructure: M. Jeckel • 1st milestone: provide a functional specification for GIF++ and a final design reportby October 2012 • Combined effort with PH & User Feedback Dorothea Pfeiffer
