What is kelp??? • Kelp is a large piece of brown algae that lives in cool, relatively shallow waters close to the shore. • -Kelp is a very simple organism with a holdfast, a stipe, and blades. • -A holdfast is a root structure that forms at the bottom of kelp. This is what keeps the kelp mounted between rocks and other materials on the ocean floor. • -A stipe is just like a plants stem. Its strong, yet flexible, allowing kelp to sway in ocean currents. • -The blades contain a special gas, which act like a float, that brings the kelp towards the surface to gather the suns energy.

  4. More about kelp….. - Under ideal conditions kelp can grow up too 2 feet everyday! That’s faster than tropical bamboo. Kelp grows straight to the surface, where it spreads on top of water and forms a dense canopy. Kelp has to grow towards the sun for photosynthesis. Giant kelp often grows in turbulent water, which brings renewed supplies of nutrients, allowing the plants to grow to a possible height of 175 feet. Also the scientific name for giant kelp is, Macrocystis pyrifera

  5. …More about kelp…..(continued) • Sometimes large amounts of kelp in an area, • also known as kelp forests, are called the • rain forests of the ocean. • -Kelp is also a good resource for people as it • is used for medicinal purposes and in various • products.-Another type of kelp is bull kelp. The scintific name is Nereocystis leutkeana

  6. What is a kelp forest? -Kelp forests are pieces kelp that grow in large, dense groups such as a forest on land. Smaller areas of bedded kelp are called kelp beds. Physically formed by brown macroalgae of the order Laminariales. Kelp forest with giant Kelp grow up to 200 feet!

  7. What does a kelp forest do? -They support areas of high plant biomass, abundant life and they are very productive and dynamic. Kelp forests are home to many different types of species.

  8. What role does a kelp forest play in an Environment? Kelp forests are the habitats for many animals and plants. They provide shade and protection from harmful organisms.

  11. HOMEWORK!!! • For homework you will draw your own kelp forest. Also, label the parts of kelp, you need these parts and other kelp to have a kelp forest! Plus a short story on you being a piece of kelp that has washed onto shore and out of the forest for the first time.
