  3. Learning Theories • Piaget’s Assimilation & Accommodation • Bruner’s Spiral curriculum • Ausubel’s Meaningful learning • Schema theory • Constructivists: Learners build their meanings on the basis of what they have in minds.(Driver et al,1994)

  4. What is prior knowledge? • Conceptsfrom the prior formal educations. • Intuitive ideasfrom the life experiences • Prior knowledge also exists at the levels of perception, focus of attention, procedural skills, modes of reasoning, and beliefs about knowledge. (Roshelle, 1995)

  5. The Roles of Prior Knowledge • a foundation for learning. => Teacher need to activate or provide prior knowledge. • a barrier to understanding. => Teacher need to challenge and restructure prior knowledge.
