FACTS AND FIGURES • 33 BOOZED UP CHILDREN ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL EVERY DAY • 7,034 UNDER 18’S TREATED FOR ALCOHOL RELATED PROBLEMS IN 2011 • CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 10 DRINKING TO DANGEROUS LEVELS • 111 ADMISSIONS TO LEEDS HOSPITALS IN FIRST HALF OF 2011 • UK HAS HIGHEST RATE OF ALCOHOL RELATED INJURIES IN EUROPE • ALCOHOL CONTRIBUTES TO 5% OF DEATHS IN YOUNG PEOPLE

WHAT CAN YOU DO? • TALK ABOUT NEGATIVE AND SOCIAL SIDES • SET A GOOD EXAMPLE • RESPECT THE LAW – DON’T BUY ALCOHOL • SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES AND STICK TO THEM • ENCOURAGE DRINKING LOWER STRENGTH BRANDS – NOT TO DRINK TOO QUICKLY • AGREE RULES AT PARTIES – BE AROUND IF THEY HAVE A PARTY AT HOME • MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD CAN GET HOME SAFELY

  19. THE LAW Section 1 of the Protection of Children Act 1978 Taking or distributing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child under eighteen years of age.

STAY IN CONTROL Four men jailed after admitting running a paedophile ring that sent millions of indecent images around the world – June 2011 Lincolnshire Police found a powerful computer system which allowed users to share and view up to 3 million images, ranging from the lowest severity to the most extreme.

  28. BLOCK IT • BLOCK PEOPLE WHO SEND NASTY MESSAGES • DON’T OPEN UNKNOWN LINKS • DELETE EMAILS FROM PEOPLE YOU DON’T KNOW • MAKE SURE THYE KNOW ALL THEIR ‘FRIENDS’ – PEOPLE LIE

  29. FLAG IT • ENSURE THEY FLAG UP IF THEY ARE UPSET • OR SOMEONE ASKS THEM TO MEET • IF THEY ARE WORRIED OR UNHAPPY • MAKE SURE THEY KNOW NEVER TO MEET ANYONE THEY HAVE MET ON LINE

WHAT IS CANNABIS? • Cannabis is naturally occurring - it is made from the cannabis plant. • The main active chemical in it is tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC for short). • THC is the ingredient in cannabis that can make you feel very chilled out, happy and relaxed. • THC can also make you hallucinate, meaning that it can alter your senses, so that you might see, hear or feel things in a different way to normal.

  35. CANNABIS – THE FACTS • A big myth about cannabis is that it’s safe because it’s natural. Cannabis has some very real effects on your mood, as well as creating longer-term problems: • Cannabis can make you feel very anxious and even paranoid. • Using it has also been linked, in some people, to serious, long-term mental health problems. • Cannabis is still the most commonly used illegal drug.

CANNABIS – THE EFFECTS • It can cause feelings of anxiety, suspicion, panic and paranoia. • For people with illnesses such as schizophrenia, cannabis can cause a serious relapse. • Increase in the risk of later developing psychotic illnesses including schizophrenia • Cannabis can affect the way the brain works. • Regular, heavy use makes it difficult to learn and concentrate and research has linked cannabis use to poor exam results. This is a potentially serious risk if you’re young, when the brain is still developing. • People who take a lot of cannabis can also find they lack motivation.

WHAT HAPPENS IF FOUND IN POSSESSION? 1st Offence – Possession only If small amount– dealt with under Schools Discipline Policy in partnership with Safer Schools Officer (No police record) If outside school - would be arrested and taken to Police Station and would receive a reprimand (caution)
