  2. Work on these exercises on your own or with a partner. Identify the premise/s and conclusion of each argument (Size 4).

  3. [1] AAlthough certain events in the subatomic realm occur at random, I still say that the universe as a whole displays a marvelous order. BPerhaps the best evidence for this is the fact that scientists continue to discover regularities that can be formulated as laws. (2)

  4. [2] ADavid is a good student. BHe studies hard, Che always participates in class discussions, and Dhe comes in for help on all of his papers. (4)

  5. [3] AGo to class! BThe lectures are interesting, Cyou should get your money’s worth, and Dyou will find out what will be on the tests. EPlus, you’ll probably earn brownie points with the professor. (4)

  6. [4] AI think everyone would agree that life is worth protecting, and that Bthe environment sustains all of us. CIt stands to reason, then, that we need to protect the environment. (3)

  7. [5] AIt is not always moral to save five lives at the cost of one life. BFor if it is always moral to save five lives at the cost of one life, then it is moral to remove the organs of a healthy person against his wishes and transplant them into five

  8. [5] people who need organ transplants. CBut it is not moral to perform such transplants because doing so violates the rights of the healthy person. (3)

  9. [6] AMedical researchers are constantly discovering new ways to treat and cure diseases, and Bthe health of our citizens should be a top national priority. CDoctors should then be eligible for government grants to support their work. (3)

  10. [7] APool maintenance can cost hundreds of dollars a year and Bwe really don’t have that kind of money. So, CI don’t think we should put a pool in this summer. Besides, Dpools pose a real drowning danger to small children. (4)

  11. [8] AWe need to take this animal to treat its injuries, but Bwe can't take it home. CI think we should take it to the vet. (3)
