  1. Chapter 6: A Case Concluded

  2. Overview • Cordelia finally starts to become proactive • Pieces of the puzzle quickly fall together • Ambrose revealed to be the mastermind of the crime, although it happened by accident. • Crime is more complicated than what the reader likely thinks, due to the multitude of people involved.

  3. Overview- continued • Temporary change of scene from De Courcy Island, break from the “manor house” style of the novel. • Confrontation with Ambrose • Final hanging questions solved by Simon • Story ends at a cliffhanger, since Ambrose is not convicted.

  4. Characterization • The true colours of characters are revealed • Mrs. Munter reveals that she is distant, only staying for her Mr. Munter • Reveals that they were not actually married • Tolly reveals that she started the poison pen notes over the death of her child.

  5. Characterization- continued • Noticeable change of attitude from the servants. • Cold, dominant attitude, in control of the situation. • Tolly is revealed to be much smarter than what most people thought, although this was foreshadowed earlier. • Cordelia wonders why the decided to be servents

  6. Characterization- Ambrose Gorrienge • Reasons for his actions have been “foreshadowed” • i.e every character was given a possible motivation to wish for Clarissa’s death • Ambrose shown to be particularly cunning and quick-thinking • Reveals Simon’s location only to kill Cordelia, and destroy the article. • Destroys all proof, and intends to fight.

  7. Characterization- Cordelia • By this time Cordelia’s character is more or less established. • Still looked down slightly by Grogan and Buckley, who see her more of an annoyance than an asset. • Her belt is finally put to practical use, but she is too sentimental to realize it. • Impulsive as always, rushes to save Simon.

  8. Stylistic Devices • Very direct language, appropriate for explaining • Story becomes plot-driven, as opposed having emphasis on characterization. • Entire showdown occurs over the course of two days, showing an increase in pace. • Cordelia expresses various strong emotions over the chapter.
