  3. The Titans • Cronus (Saturn) • Ocean • Tethys • Hyperion • Mnemosyne • Themis • Iapetus

  4. 12 Great Olympians • Zeus (Jupiter) • Poseidon (Neptune) • Hades (Pluto) • Hestia (Vesta) • Hera (Juno) • Ares (Mars) • Athena (Minerva) • Apollo • Aphrodite (Venus) • Hermes (Mercury) • Artemis (Diana) • Hephaestus (Vulcan)

  5. Zeus (Jupiter) • Lord of the Sky, the Rain god, and the Cloud gatherer who wielded the awful thunderbolt • Greater than that of all the other divinities together • Could be opposed and deceived • Had endless love affairs, trying to hide his infidelity from his wife • Two sides, the high and the low

  6. Hera (Juno) • Zeus’ wife and sister • Protector of marriage and married women • Extreme jealousy of the women Zeus fell in love with • Portrayed as angry and vindictive • Punished the women even if they were innocent

  7. Poseidon (Neptune) • Ruler of the sea • Zeus’ brother • Second in line of power, behind Zeus • His wife was Amphitrite, a granddaughter of the Titan, Ocean • Referred to as “Earth-shaker” • Carried a trident, 3 pronged spear

  8. Hades (Pluto) • Zeus’ brother • King of the Dead • God of Wealth (Pluto) • He was a terrible, but not evil god • His wife, Persephone, became Queen of the Lower World

  9. Athena (Minerva) • Daughter of Zeus alone, no mother bore her • She sprang from his head in full armor, full grown • Zeus’ favorite child • Her temple was the Parthenon • Goddess/protector of many things: • War • The city • Wisdom • Reason • Purity

  10. Apollo • Son of Zeus and Leto • Master musician who plays his golden lyre • The Archer god • God of Light • God of Truth, cannot speak a lie

  11. Artemis (Diana) • Apollo’s twin sister, daughter of Zeus and Leto • Goddess of chastity, virginity, the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment • Dislikes men and opposes the institution of marriage • Protector of the young • She hunts with silver arrows

  12. Aphrodite (Venus) • Goddess of Love and Beauty • Can compel anyone she wishes to desire her • Her other side, she can be malicious and treacherous • Wife of Hephaestus

  13. Hermes (Mercury) • Son of Zeus and Maia • Graceful, swift of motion • Wears winged sandals and wings on his crowned hat • Zeus’ messenger • Master thief • Divine Herald who led the souls down to their last home

  14. Ares (Mars) • Son of Zeus and Hera • God of War • Considered murderous and bloodstained • Disliked by both his parents

  15. Hephaestus (Vulcan and Mulciber) • Son of Zeus and Hera, sometimes said that he has no father • God of Fire • Only god to be physically ugly and lame • Wife is Aphrodite • God of both smiths and weavers • He is kind and peace-loving

  16. Hestia (Vesta) • Zeus’ sister, a virgin goddess like Athena and Artemis • Goddess of the Hearth, the symbol of the home • Does not have a distinct personality
