For the poor b/c they still had to pay a dowries • If women couldn't find a man or employment they settled with prostitution

  3. R • The inquisition affected "witches" as well; this spread as far as N-America • Most "witches" were widows in the lower class • All church burned witches but as the inquisition ended most of this did too

S • Social patterns were determined by demographic change, status, wealth • Started keeping track of people • Population increased by 1/3 bring the total to 100,000,000 • Social hierarchy was becoming less important than wealth • Nobles held the offices but lose feudal power over the peasants; middle class was getting offices • Terrible working conditions • Ppl would live with their entire family and own the same estate for generations; this was ending to the house structure of today • Women began to work (17 century) and marry later • Men, if found that their wives weren't virgins, could divorce the wife without the return of the dowry. Men however, had to be sexually experienced and possibly required by law; premarital sex happened a lot and was becoming more and more common in women • Widows inherited the estate and the business and became more accepted • Blacks were in Europe back in the Greek times and remained a small pop. • Blacks fascinated the Europeans b/c of their knowledge of the world

  5. I • Increase in pop. led to manufacturing jobs • Universities were gearing edu. Not just no nobles but also middle class • People like Luther promoted free public edu. • Girls were becoming more edu.
