2. Introducing…. MS. KATHRYN ROESSLER, Skipcha’s new music teacher!!!

3. Schedule • Within every eight school days, 2nd through 5th Grade students will visit the general music classroom twice, the piano lab once, computer lab once, and P.E. four times. PK, Kindergarten, and 1st go to P.E. and general music or computer lab each day. 1st Grade will also start going into the piano lab in late September or early October.

4. Expectations • “Can Do” Attitude • Respect yourself, others, & equipment • All body parts to yourself • Raise your hand to speak • Participation is required at all times

5. Classroom Management • KISD Classroom Management Framework • 2 verbal warning • Refocus Area (2nd time, parents are notified) • Buddy Room (Parents are notified) • Office Referral (Parents are notified) • Severe Offenses • Reward systems (Game Days/”Musician of the Month”)

7. Goals • To read, write, sing, and play music • To understand and respect many different cultures of music • To provide opportunities to perform • To develop proper concert etiquette

9. Grading • Students are given numerous opportunities to demonstrate understanding and mastery of music skills. (written, aural, performance, observation, participation)

10. Grading Breakdown Excellent – 90% - 100% Satisfactory – 80% - 89% Needs Improvement – 70% - 79% Unsatisfactory – 69% and below

11. Music Memory This year students in 3rd through 5th grade will be listening to 16 different pieces of music. They will learn to recognize the pieces and composers. At the end of the year, there will be a “Music Memory” contest to test their knowledge of these 16 pieces.

12. What did music class look like in the 70’s and 80’s? • Music teacher played piano and the children sang. • Not a set standard for reading and writing music • Music programs were not in every school (this is still the case in some states)

13. What does music class look like today? • Blend of Orff, Kodály, and Dalcroze • Emphasis on world music as well as Western music • Music and technology • Music and movement • The Mozart Effect

14. Zoltan Kodály • Hungarian • Folk song material • Curwen later added hand-signs • Systematic way to teach music literacy and pitch accuracy

15. Carl Orff • Composer • Orff-Schulwerk • Barred-instruments • Process of rhythmic speech, body percussion, singing, and instruments

16. Émile Jaques-Dalcroze • Eurhythmics • Music must be experienced through movement • Visual art interacting with music

17. Music Opportunities at Skipcha • 4/5 grade after-school choir (Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 – 3:30) • Music Memory Contest in the spring for 3rd – 5th grade • AND…

18. The Skipcha Piano Lab! • 24 student pianos with 88 hammer-action, weighted keys and 3 pedals • State of the art lab set-up comparable to many university music school facilities • Only lab of this size in KISD where children get the opportunity to study piano as part of the regular music class rotation (and free of charge)
