  1. How to write a paragraph

  2. 11 Sentences • Each of your paragraphs should be at least 11 sentences. • Here is the breakdown of what a paragraph looks like.

  3. Paragraph 1 Main Idea 5 8 Concrete Detail Concrete Detail 2 Concrete Detail 4 6 7 9 10 3 Commentary Commentary Commentary Commentary Commentary Commentary 11 Conclusion/Transition

  4. Main Idea • This is what your paragraph is about. It is also known as the THESIS. • Here are some examples of a main idea: • Running a marathon is Hard work. Elie Wiesel’s father should have Listened to Moishe the Beadle

  5. Concrete Detail Concrete Details are FACTS. Just like concrete, you can not break them. They are always true. Examples: Elie Wiesel was from Sighet. Las Vegas is in the state of Nevada.

  6. Fact or Opinion? • Mr. McGee is the best English teacher in Las Vegas. • Fact or Opinion? • The students in this class are freshmen. • Fact or Opinion? • Write me 3 facts and 3 opinions now.

  7. Commentary Commentary is your opinion. These are not facts, and cannot necessarily be proven. Much like what a sports COMMENTATOR says during a game. “Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL.”

  8. Example School lunch can be gross. For example, I got a piece of cold, slimy pizza the other day. The cheese was falling off the pizza. I absolutely didn’t want to eat it.Another reason lunch is gross is the milk, which is sometimes lumpy and chunky. When you open the milk, it stinks to high heaven. Sometimes, it even looks like butter! Finally, the chili can be so greasy that you see the grease floating. There’s no way to eat it like that. You have to strain it.From these examples, it’s clear school lunch can be nasty.

  9. Homework • Write an 11 sentence paragraph like the one I just showed you. You should underline your sentences with the appropriate color. Green, blue, black, red. • Your topic?: Should the government be allowed to censor the internet?
