  5. The Queen's role As Head of the Church ~:~ Archbishops and bishops are appointed by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister, who considers the names selected by a Church Commission. They take an oath of allegiance to The Queen on appointment and may not resign without Royal authority. The connection between Church and State is also symbolised by the fact that the 'Lords Spiritual‘ sit in the House of Lords. (consisting of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and 24 diocesan bishops) Parish priests also take an oath of allegiance to The Queen.

The Queen's role As Head of the Church ~:~ The General Synod The General Synod (including the bishops, elected representatives from the clergy and the laity) is the supreme authority of the Church of England. In 1970 The Queen became the first Sovereign to inaugurate and address the General Synod in person. Since then Her Majesty has inaugurated and addressed the opening session of the General Synod every five years after diocesan elections. The General Synod has the power to legislate by Canon in its own domestic affairs such as worship and doctrine, but The Queen's assent is required for the promulgation of such Canons. assent is given on the Home Secretary's advice.

Religious Diversity • Tolerance • Inter-faith Harmony • The Queen acknowledges and celebrates religious diversity and tolerance in the UK and the Commonwealth. • reflected in both Her Majesty's Christmas and Commonwealth Day messages, which often address the theme of inter-faith harmony and tolerance. • The Queen has met with and hosted the leaders of numerous faiths and denominations and visited many different places of worship in the UK and across the Commonwealth. • The leaders of faiths and denominations are regularly invited to major Royal ceremonial events such as Royal weddings and Services of Thanksgiving. • The Queen: an Inter-Faith Reception, Lambeth Palace, • 15 February 2012 • “Faith plays a key role in the identity of millions of people, providing not only a system of belief but also a sense of belonging.” • “It can act as a spur for social action. The Queen's role As Head of the Church ~:~ MAUNDY THURSDAY • A Royal Pilgrimage • & The Service • Different Cathedral/Church each year. • Service held on Maundy Thursday. • Symbolic distribution of alms by Sovereign. • Recipients inter-denominational pensioners. • 1 man & 1 woman • for each year of Queen’s life. • Receive in pence Maundy Money, • equivalent to Queen’s age, • for service to church and community. • 4 Maundy Children attend, • 2 girls & 2 boys. • Officials wear towels over clothes, • represents washing of feet.

The Royal Arms • Symbolised King’s authority. • After Henry VIII became Supreme Head of the Church of England in 1534, began to appear in churches. • Represents connection between Monarch and Church. The Royal Arms evolved over nine centuries. Richard the Lionheart chose three lions to represent England as a symbol of strength and ferocity. Immediately identified The King in battle. The shield, crest, helm and mantling all important elements of the arms and originated from medieval armour. At one time displayed in nearly every Anglican Church. Now seen in about 15% of churches Including here at All Saints, Hinton Ampner

The Queen's role As Head of the Church ~:~ “Church Bells” Mark the Royal Occasion Bells will be rung out On Sunday 12 June At noon across all Upper Itchen Benefice Churches To mark the occasion of Queen’s Official Birthday All Saints, Hinton Ampner has 3 Bells inscribed: 1. Serve God I.W. 1603 2. Fere God I.W. 1603 3. In God is my Hope 1619 • The founder of bells 1 & 2 was John Wallis of Salisbury bell foundry. • On Bell 3 some of the letters are reversed & the “m” is upside down.

Heavenly Father, as we celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, receive our heartfelt thanksfor all that you have given her in these ninety yearsand for all that she has given to her people. Continue, we pray, your loving purposes in her, and as you gather us together in celebration, unite us also in love and service to one another; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Heavenly Father, who hast brought our gracious sovereign Queen Elizabeth to the completion of her ninetieth year, and dost gather her people in celebration of the same: grant that we, rejoicing before thee with thankful hearts, may ever be united in love and service to one another, and her kingdom flourish in prosperity and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
