  3. What of Acts 2:38?What is“the gift of the Holy Spirit?” Miracles? The indwelling? The Spirit Himself? Gift from the Spirit? And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38 ESV) Best rule of thumb is to let the scriptures speak for themselves. Notice Acts 2:39.

Romans 4:13, 16 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. …For this reason it is by faith, ….so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

  14. Why is it called the gift of the Spirit? Galatians 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us…in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

  17. 2 Corinthians 1:22 (God)…who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

  19. What of Eph.1:13-14; 2 Cor.1:22?What of the Spirit given as a “Pledge?” The Spirit is NOT a “pledge” because He is given personally to each one The Spirit IS a pledge because He was given, i.e., sent…. • to give us power to overcome sin • to assure us of life to come • with proof

  20. What of Eph.1:13-14; 2 Cor.1:22?What of the Spirit given as a “seal?” W.E.Vine- an emblem of ownership, authenticity, security, & destination Thayer- metaphorically, respecting God, who by the Holy Spirit indicates who are His.

  21. What of Eph.1:13-14; 2 Cor.1:22?What of the Spirit given as a “seal?” A mark, impression, stamp of authenticity, ownership, or identity A figurative expression of God’s approval and ownership…. It is manifested by His mark…. i.e. god-likeness

  22. 1 Peter 1:16 …because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

  23. 1 John 3:3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

  24. Galatians 5:22-23 But fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  25. The Holy Spirit Has Been Given… • To give eternal life by revelation and instruction • To ‘indwell’ our hearts, minds, & lives • As a ‘pledge’ that what is promised will be paid in full • As a ‘seal’ to put God’s mark in our hearts and lives. Acts 20:32
